Your Kingdom Foundation
"Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ,
let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation
of repentance from dead works
and of faith toward God,
of the teaching of immersions,
of laying on of hands,
of resurrection of the dead
and of eternal judgment.
And this we will do if God permits," Hebrews 6'1-3.
Everything has a beginning. In the case of those who believe the word of Christ, the crucial part of it is the foundation.
Their success depends on possessing the foundational understandings that the Holy Spirit has provided. He lists them as part of what is commonly called the Letter to the Hebrews.
Right from verse 1 of chapter 1 the Holy Spirit inspired writer lays out the eternal significance and relevance of Jesus as the Son of God - to them, and to all Believers.
But soon he has to interrupt himself. He says,
"... we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God," Hebrews 5'11-12.
The sad fact is that a stern exhortation was necessary as they had become "dull of hearing" and needed someone to teach them again.
Of course, God wants His People to be the opposite of that. And so that we can, He has caused this writer to write them down.
Now Believers can have the foundational understandings of:
repentance from dead works
faith toward God
the teaching of immersions
laying on of hands
resurrection of the dead
eternal judgment (Hebrews 6'1-2)
There are two things to note about the teaching and experiencing of these oracles/principles.
1. The writer says, "you need someone to teach you again". And he refers to them having been discussed. This reveals a teaching-discussion environment, and perhaps experiencing.
2. These principles/oracles are listed in sequence. But experiences may not, as happened here:
"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.
And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
Then Peter answered, 'Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be immersed who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?'” Acts 10'44-47.
The obvious example here of two things being in different sequence is the immersion in the Holy Spirit preceding immersion in water.
JESUS: "LEARN FROM ME"
When Believers experience rough times they know they can immediately respond to the Lord's invitation:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light,” Matthew 11'28-30.
But notice too, that Jesus said: "learn from me". One major teaching of His is about having a strong foundation on which to build an unshakeable spiritual house:
"Whoever comes to Me and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
"He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock," Luke 6'47-48.
Various things "beat vehemently" against Believers. The vehemence of some is obvious, some subtle, claiming to be of value but are not.
Without a foundation in the word of Christ Believers are in danger of being deceived and turned from His word.
Colossians 2'8 says:
"Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit,
according to the tradition of men,
according to the basic principles of the world,
and not according to Christ".
Beware! Accepting deceptions like these puts Believers outside of God's grace, His protection and the abundance of Kingdom life.
And they lay them open to the enemy working his evil power in them. Adam and Eve found that out!
However, a Believer may be vulnerable when reading the word of Christ. Perhaps it's hard to understand. If it is, do not say something like "I don't understand".
Ask, "Lord, help me understand". Then leave it and the Holy Spirit will settle it in due course.
BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
The beginning of a Believer's Kingdom Foundation is made up of conviction, understanding and experience as, in His mercy and grace, the Holy Spirit works.
Everyone who has repented and received Christ has done so by faith which "... comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God," Romans 10'17.
And then this:
"But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life," Titus 3'5-7.
PRINCIPLES OF BLESSING
When these elementary principles of God's oracles are hidden in a Believer's heart they become blessings of their experience.
Paul, the apostle, said:
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing
in the heavenly places in Christ," Ephesians 1'3.
Some of the marvellous spiritual blessings of:
being born again (1 Peter 1'23),
being delivered from the power of darkness (John 1'13),
being transferred into Christ's Kingdom (Colossians 1.13),
being placed into the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12'13),
becoming a "new creation" (2 Corinthians 5'17),
being made alive together with Christ even when we were dead in trespasses
being raised up together, and made to sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2'5-6)
being qualified and justified and
being declared to be much more!
And all of these Kingdom things are of God!
Prayer. Heavenly Father, thank you for the power and blessing that these elementary principles of your oracles carry.
Thank you, too, for your mercy and grace and the Holy Spirit's help to receive, incorporate and live in them daily.
In the name of Jesus. Amen.
