Some amazing things happened on the mountain where the Lord was "transfigured" and one was the appearance of Moses and Elijah.

Peter, James and John were startled and afraid. Nevertheless, Peter, being his usual forward self, thought he had to say something, anything.

So he said the first thing that came into his mind. And at that point "a voice came out of the cloud" (Matthew 17'1-8).

It was the voice of the Father who began by declaring His whole-hearted approval of His Son.

He then sealed it with a command to "Hear Him!”. These are two of the most meaningful words ever spoken to humankind.

The direction to "Hear Him" had been foreshadowed many centuries earlier. The Jews knew well what Moses had prophesied to Israel about God raising up a Spokesman one day:

"The Lord said to me: ... ‘I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren and will put my words in His mouth and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.

And it shall be that whoever will not hear my words, which He speaks in my name, I will require it of him’”, Deuteronomy 18’17-19.

Following Pentecost Peter reminded the Israel of his day of it, declaring that Moses' prophecy had been fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth:

"For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you.

And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people'.

To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turn- ing away every one of you from your iniquities’," Acts 3'22-23.

Later Stephen, like Peter, also pointed back to Moses' words. On the day he was stoned to death he reminded the murderous Jews standing around him that:

"This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear',” Acts 7'37.
